Man shot by police, accused of running over CHP officer in San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO - KTVU is learning more information about the man accused of stealing a car and then running over a CHP officer in San Francisco's Oceanview district.
Neighbors describe the suspect, 39-year-old Ansar El Muhammad as a very religious and peaceful man.
He also goes by the name Notorious Dickerson.
One of his friends, who was with him just before the shooting, posted a video to Facebook live.
Police say at around 3:30 Tuesday afternoon, the San Mateo County Vehicle Theft Task Force spotted a stolen car and attempted to pull over the driver near Montana and Faxon.
Officers say as they approached the car, El Muhammad stepped on the gas, dragging a San Mateo County CHP officer with him and then crashed the vehicle.
Officers from the Daly City and San Mateo police departments as well as San Francisco CHP surrounded the suspect and shot El Muhammad.
Witnesses say the officers fired several shots.
El Muhammad was shot in the leg but the full extent of his injuries is unknown at this time.
His friend D.B, Boone says police used excessive force.
"Another shot in the leg what you gonna do that's all it take. Multiple shots ok you trying to overkill him now, for what?" he said.
Friends say El Muhammad is an artist who grew up in the Oceanview neighborhood.
KTVU has been told that he's been upgraded from critical to serious condition.
The CHP officer suffered road rash on his arm and remains in the hospital.
