Mayor Schaaf determined to keep Raiders in Oakland

With the Oakland Raiders sitting in second place of the AFC West at four and four, the team has already won more games this year than last. That gives fans a lot to cheer about, until you bring up the team’s possible move to Carson.

"I'm not believing a word of it. I think we're on the right track," says Raiders fan Loren Piper. She’s been a season ticket holder since 1963. Piper attended the press conference where Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf gave a status report of her fight to keep the Raiders.

"I think we heard clearly from the owners that we need to sit down with the team. We need to come with some specific dollar amounts," says Mayor Schaaf. The mayor and council member Larry Reid presented a slideshow to NFL owners in New York Wednesday. It highlighted reasons the mayor says the team should stay in town. Her presentation came on the same day it was announced that Disney CEO Bob Iger is backing the deal to move the Raiders to Carson.

“I am staying focused on getting a deal done in Oakland. I cannot let the Los Angeles story distract me. There's been a lot of instability in political leadership in this city over the last six years and so I respect they have looked for other options," says Schaaf.

"I think it's fruitless. I think the NFL has already decided that they're going to go with the Carson project," says Raiders fan Morie Kahane.

Ricky's in San Leandro is a place where you'll find diehard Raiders fans.

"They're the Oakland Raiders. Would it be great for them to go to L.A.? Alright. For the distance I'd have to drive, yeah, but they're the Oakland Raiders and I feel they should be here,” says Raiders fan Victor Gasset who is from Los Angeles.

Mayor Schaaf says she’ll work hard to make some progress over the next two months, although she's not sure a deal will be done by then. The mayor doesn't have much time because on January 1st, the NFL will start entertaining deals from cities interested in the Raiders.  The league is expected to make their final decision in March on whether or not the team will stay or go.
