Mississippi homecoming queen/football star nails game winning point

OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (KTVU) - It was quite a memorable night for a Mississippi teen, who on Friday night was crowned homecoming queen of her high school.

That in itself would be a pretty big moment in a teenage girl's life, but the night got even better for Ocean Springs High School senior Kaylee Foster. 

Moments after being named homecoming queen, she traded in her tiara for a helmet and swapped out her gown for a football uniform and shoulder pads, and she returned to the field, where she played a huge role to bring her team to victory.  

After Ocean Springs scored a touchdown to tie up the game against George County High School, the newly crowned homecoming queen stepped into her role as the team's ace place-kicker and brought it home.

Foster kicked the game winning field goal, prompting a frenzied response from her team, schoolmates and home team fans.

Ocean Springs High School won the game 13 to 12, with seven of the 13 points coming from Foster. In addition to that extra point, she was responsible for two field goals.

Foster later recalled the emotions that ran through her before that winning kick saying she was excited and nervous but with encouragement from her coach and the team's holder, she felt her confidence swell.

"And I was like okay, I can do this, it's fine," Foster said. "And then I kick it and I look up cause I see this guy and he jumps and he has his hand up and I'm like, he just blocked it. Like that just did not go in.  And then it went in," she recalled.

She later told The Mississippi Press, she felt more confident about that game winning move than being named homecoming queen. “I was pretty sure I wasn't going to be homecoming queen, but I was pretty sure I was going to make that kick.”

Foster also spoke of the camaraderie that's developed with the other members of her football team. "I love the relationships that I've made with them," she said. "I don't have brothers, I just have my one sister. But just being around them, it gives me a bunch of brothers to have. They all have my back, and it's really cool to know that," she added.

The standout athlete also plays soccer and runs track. She's been on the varsity football team for the past three years and credits her family for all of the support they've given her.
