Multi-car crash leads to delays on EB I-80 in Berkeley
BERKELEY, Calif. (KTVU) - A multi-car crash that ended with box-truck flipping over a retaining wall along eastbound I-80 in Berkeley Monday morning, may be connected to a drunk driver.
The crash was first reported near University Avenue around 2:43a.m.
According the California Highway Patrol investigators, several cars collided on the freeway including one with a driver believed to be under the influence.
Right after this happened, a box truck swerved to avoid that crash and lost control.
The truck hit and damaged about 30 feet of a concrete retaining wall before flipping over that wall and ending up on the other side.
Amazingly, there were no reports of any serious injuries.
Several lanes of eastbound I-80 were closed while crews cleaned up the scene.
Tow crews told KTVU at 4:15a.m. that they were going to be working to upright and remove the truck from a trail that runs parallel to the freeway.
This operation will minimize the traffic impact on the freeway but traffic may still be slowed as drivers will see crews working on this crash.
Investigators say the retaining wall needs repairs but that those will likely be made after the morning commute.
