Oakland police chase vehicle wanted out of San Francisco

OAKLAND, Calif. - Oakland police engaged in a high-speed pursuit of a vehicle wanted out of San Francisco late Tuesday afternoon. The incident ended with a suspect in police custody. 

What we know:

The chase ended at 36th and Webster streets, near the Alta Bates Summit Medical Center. Oakland police confirmed their officers initiated the pursuit on behalf of the San Francisco Police Department. 

At an impromptu news conference, the Oakland Police Department said an individual was being investigated by SFPD for "multiple violent felonies." SFPD attempted to make an arrest, at which point, OPD said the suspect assaulted an officer. The vehicle was followed by police until Oakland police, in their marked cars, were able to attempt to take the suspect into custody. That's when OPD said the suspect rammed an Oakland police vehicle. 

Oakland police said one shot was fired by an OPD officer. There are no injuries to the suspect or to Oakland police officers, an OPD spokesperson said. 

San Francisco Police Department offered their account of what happened in a statement. They said it was at around 3:50 p.m. that officers assigned to their Community Violence Reduction Team attempted to stop the wanted vehicle on the 800 block of 47th Street in Oakland. They said the suspect attempted to flee, struck an officer, causing injuries. 

They said OPD took the suspect into custody after they fled on foot and tried to carjack another vehicle. SFPD said their injured officer was taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries. 

Oakland police are leading the probe into the pursuit itself, while San Francisco authorities are handling the investigation into the incident that triggered the chase.

While no further details were immediately available, aerial footage showed a heavy law enforcement presence near Interstate 580. During the pursuit, SkyFOX captured images of Oakland patrol cars chasing a dark-colored vehicle along I-580.
