On the brink of eviction, community rallies to save East Bay shelter

OAKLAND, Calif. (KTVU) - An upwelling of community support has saved an East Bay women's shelter from eviction. 

'Serenity House' is an Oakland shelter for women who have survived addiction, violence, and homelessness. 

But the non-profit ran into trouble when they were told the rent on their San Pablo Avenue facility would increase by 75 percents, going from $2,000 a month to $3,500. 

Serenity House created a GoFundMe page which has surpassed its $14,000 goal. In 11 days, more than $28,000 has been raised.

Directors say they hope to raise enough money to cover the rent until late summer and early fall when new grants and contracts kick in.
