Oakland man shot by Pittsburg police after pointing loaded handgun at officer

A 32-year-old Oakland man was shot and wounded Saturday afternoon by a Pittsburg police officer after he pointed a loaded handgun at the officer during a trespassing investigation, Pittsburg police said.

The man, whose name was not provided, was taken to a hospital and is expected to survive.

The whole incident began when police were called to a business on the 3700 block of Harbor St. on reports that a man was on top of the roof of the business.

Officers arrived to find the man off the roof and standing next to a vehicle in the parking lot.

When police asked the man to remain put, he ignored their commands and retrieved a handgun from on top of one of the car's rear tires. He then ran away from police.

Another officer arrived to the parking lot and reportedly asked the man several times to lay down. The man then pointed the handgun at the officer.

The officer used his gun to shoot the man, who then dropped the gun and fell to the ground.

After administrating life-saving aid to the man, police then realized the man's handgun was loaded.

Police say they aren't identifying the man who was shot as the investigation is still ongoing.

The Contra Costa County District Attorney’s Office is conducting an independent investigation into the shooting, alongside an outside investigator conducting an investigation for the Pittsburg police dept.

There's no word on why the man was drawn to the roof of the business in the first place.

Police ask that anyone with information about the incident contact Capt. S. Albanese.

The suspect's name, and body camera footage, will be released at a later time, Pittsburg police said.
