Police investigate report of 2nd student with gun at Milpitas High

MILPITAS, Calif. (BCN and KTVU) - Tense moments at Milpitas High School after a 14-year-old brings a semi automatic handgun and ammunition to campus. It's the third Bay Area school this week where young students have been caught with guns while class is in session.

The school principal said there will be increased security Friday as well as counseling services for students and staff. One parent said she is considering whether she wants her daughter to go to school, still very shaken up.

"You send them to school thinking they are safe," said Parent Esmerald Llamas. "The next thing you know. You have your kids texting you. Mom school is on lockdown."

Llamas's daughter is a freshman at Milpitas High School. She was told by teachers to shelter inside around noon after a school resource officer called police reporting a student had a gun on campus.

"I was really scared because he could have shot anyone if he was really mad," said Freshman Clarissa Llamas.

Skyfox was overhead shortly after. Within minutes police arrived. Nearby Pomeroy Elementary and Russell Middle schools were also placed on lockdown.

"Officers went into the bathroom, they found the student," said Lt. Raj Maharaj of Milpitas Police. "He did have a handgun on his person. He was taken into custody. He was very cooperative and didn't resist arrest."

This is the third time this week a student was caught with a firearm. On Monday, a student at Village High School in Pleasanton was arrested after he brought a loaded gun. On Tuesday at Twin Creeks Elementary in San Ramon, an 8-year-old brought a loaded gun showing it to other students. His father is now under arrest facing several charges including child endangerment.

At Milpitas High School, police would not say how the teenager got the gun nor his intention. Some students said they want schools to be more involved.

"Someone is afraid to go to school that they'd have to bring a gun," said Junior Harrison Lao. "That's what's worrying me the most."

"Someone brought a weapon to school and it could potentially hurt somebody," said Junior Dara Vallacqua. 

For Esmerald Llamas, the incident triggered fear and anxiety. She plans to talk to her daughter about guns, a conversation she didn't think she'd have to have at this age.

"It's not a toy," said Llamas. "It's not something you go off and show off at school. You see all these things happening in the world."

Milpitas Police would not say much about the 14-year-old who bought the gun other than he's from Milpitas and he could face charges for possessing a handgun. Police also said this is a reminder for parents to lock up their firearms.
