Police search for suspects in Vallejo shooting of 7-year-old boy

VALLEJO, Calif. (KTVU) - Police are looking for at least five suspects involved in a drive-by shooting Wednesday evening that critically injured a 7-year-old boy.

Kumar Polk was with a crowd that gathered on 5th Street in Vallejo to mourn a neighbor who died suddenly in his sleep. Witnesses told KTVU they heard multiple gun shots. Polk was hit.

"That is terrible," said neighbor, Linda Tyler. "I don't know who would shoot a 7-year-old kid. It don't make no sense. I don't understand it. I never will."

Tyler's blue sedan had a rear window shot out. She was home Wednesday evening when she heard the gunfire. "Then I came outside and my car was messed up," she said. "I don't know what happened. I don't know why it happened. I don't know nothing!"

Rich White was there too. He said anyone who knows anything isn't likely to talk. "People don't talk to the police," he said. "You'll lose your life!"

We asked how silence helps prevent another innocent child from being shot. White exhaled and said, "That's a good question." One with no good answer.

"It's consequences for everything especially growing up in an area like this; the hood, ghetto. Whatever you want to call it," he said. "Vallejo is crazy!"

At Polk's family's request, Children's Hospital in Oakland is not releasing any new information about his condition. Thursday morning, Vallejo police described his injuries as life-threatening.

Police are looking for the public's help. If anyone knows anything, call the Vallejo Police Department at (707) 651-7146.
