San Francisco capsized boat brought to surface by salvage company
SAN FRANCISCO (BCN)--A boat that capsized and sank last weekend in San Francisco, sending 30 people into the water, was raised from the bottom of the Bay today by a salvage company, police said.
The 34-foot sailboat Khaleesi, which capsized around 4 p.m. Saturday about 100 yards off of Pier 45, was located by the Police Department's marine unit using sonar equipment on Monday, according to
police.
It was moved on Tuesday while still submerged to the Hyde Street commercial pier by a salvage company and raised to the surface today, police said.
The U.S. Coast Guard has determined there will be no environmental impact from the incident, police said.
About 30 people went into the water when the boat capsized Saturday, including some who were initially trapped under the hull.
The victims were rescued by bystanders, police, firefighters and U.S. Coast Guard crews within 32 minutes, but eight people were hospitalized after the incident, according to fire officials.
One victim, a 4-year-old boy, was found unconscious and not breathing, but was rushed to San Francisco General Hospital after bystanders performed CPR. The 4-year-old was initially listed in critical condition, but
his condition improved and he was released Monday.
The Police Department's marine unit is investigating the incident.
