Suspect charged in killing of Oakland councilwoman's son
OAKLAND, Calif. (KTVU) - A 23-year-old man has been arrested and charged in the killing of a University of Southern California student who was shot during an attempted robbery in March.
The victim, 21-year-old Victor McElhaney, was the son of Oakland City Councilwoman Lynette Gibson-McElhaney.
The suspect, Ivan Hernandez, 23, was charged with one count of murder and one count of attempted robbery, the Los Angles District Attorney's Office says.
Hernandez, a suspected gang member, was allegedly trying to rob McElhaney and a group of his friends outside a liquor store about a mile from USC, authorities say.
He was rushed to a local hospital, where he died.
McElhaney was a music student at USC and had transferred from California State East Bay.
Family and friends described him as a talented jazz musician who was generous with his time helping others.
