Suspect killed in shootout with Alameda County sheriff's deputies ID'd

ALAMEDA COUNTY, Calif. (BCN) - A suspect killed during a shootout with Alameda County sheriff's deputies near San Leandro early Tuesday morning was identified Thursday as a 32-year-old Oakland resident.

Dante Osborne died during the gun battle near the East 14th Street off-ramp of Interstate Highway 238, sheriff's Sgt. Ray Kelly said. While

Osborne was an Oakland resident, he was known to frequent unincorporated areas near San Leandro, Kelly said.

Osborne was a suspect in a shooting earlier that morning in Oakland.

Oakland police said the shooting was reported at 12:49 a.m. in the 900 block of 105th Avenue. A man was struck by gunfire and taken to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

A suspect fled from that shooting in a Dodge Durango. Oakland police spotted a Durango that fit the description at about 2:20 a.m. and tried to pull it over, but the driver fled.

The pursuit went into San Leandro but the suspect evaded police. The Durango was found abandoned on Interstate Highway 580 and a carjacking attempt was reported nearby, according to the sheriff's office.

The suspect didn't manage to carjack another vehicle and California Highway Patrol officers later spotted him running on Highway 238.

They tried to stop him but he opened fire at them, according to the sheriff's office.

The gunfire hit a passing car but no one was hurt.

Officers kept chasing him to the East 14th Street off-ramp.

Sheriff's deputies confronted him there and ended up in a shootout with Osborne, who was shot and killed, according to the sheriff's office.

No deputies were injured.
