Teen accused of crashing car during Rohnert Park joyride surrenders to police

A teen who led Rohnert Park Public Safety officials on a vehicle pursuit this morning before crashing and fleeing from the scene has been arrested.

The 14-year-old suspect turned himself in and he has been booked into the Sonoma County Juvenile Hall, public safety officials said around 10:20 a.m.

The pursuit began around 1:40 a.m. when an officer was on patrol in the area of Southwest Boulevard and Seed Farm Drive.

The officer witnessed a black Kia Spectra run a stop sign at the intersection without slowing down, according to public safety officials.

The officer attempted to pull over car, but the driver refused to stop.

The driver then traveled westbound on Southwest Boulevard at more than 90 miles per hour in an attempt to evade the officer until the vehicle crashed near the intersection of Southwest and Commerce boulevards, public safety officials said.

The vehicle ran off the road, struck a road sign and several bushes before finally coming to a stop.

The driver fled from the scene on foot and two minor passengers in the vehicle were detained at the scene. The passengers did not suffer any injuries, according to public safety officials.

Following the crash, officers were unable to locate the driver, but determined he was a 14-year-old from Rohnert Park who had taken the vehicle without permission.
