Using online search to find scholarships

OAKLAND (KTVU) -- Students looking for higher education funding often search online for scholarships to help cover the costs of higher learning.

Jean Burk, an SAT instructor who lives in Texas, is the creator of the College Prep Genius Curriculum. She told "Mornings on 2: The Nine" about ways students can track down scholarships through online searches.

Some of her tips:

  • When searching for scholarship through online search engines, use words like endowment, trust, fellowship and donor.
  • Search for scholarships that highlight the student's unique qualities by using keywords associated with that talent and scholarship.
  • Establish a social media profile that includes information about your ethnicity, your parent's employer, favorite foods and extracurricular activities. Groups searching to distribute scholarships might reach out to you.
