Researchers at UCSF tracked 200 adults in the U.S., Canada, and Australia with a history of atrial fibrillation (A-Fib) over four years. Half of the participants cut out caffeine entirely, while the other half drank at least one cup of coffee a day. Those who drank coffee were less likely to experience another irregular heartbeat episode compared to the no-coffee group. A-Fib is estimated to affect about one in three adults nationwide.

Police say officers were responding to a report that a man had fired a gun into the sidewalk. Amid the ongoing government shutdown, one Oakland bakery is stepping up to help families who are struggling financially, by giving away free cakes and cupcakes. Angel Cakes Bakery, a worker-owned cooperative, launched a GoFundMe campaign this week to sponsor baked goods for families who may not be able to afford them. For every box of cupcakes or cakes sponsored, the bakery will donate another.
