ShakeAlert, the west coast's still young but operating earthquake warning system, scared some Bay Area folks Thursday evening who thought they would soon be hit by a substantial earthquake.

Shake Alert is the West Coast's young, but working, earthquake warning system. On Thursday, it frightened some Bay Area residents when it sent alerts to their cell phones to brace for a magnitude 6.0 earthquake. KTVU's Tom Vacar reports.

Red flag warning to cover parts of the Bay Area this weekend

The warning goes into effect from 11 p.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Monday and is the first to be issued this year, according to the weather service.

Cluster of earthquakes jolt Truckee area; strongest a 4.7-magnitude shaker

The first was a 3.2-magnitude earthquake that struck around 9:26 p.m. It was centered roughly 11 miles from the town. Then at 9:35 p.m., a 4.7-magnitude quake jolted the area, followed by a 3.1-magnitude two minutes later.
