$41-million Twin Peaks Tunnel project completed

SAN FRANCISCO - This is the first Monday morning in two months that the Twin Peaks Tunnel in San Francisco is back open, after the tunnel opened over the weekend.

The construction trucks and equipment that had been at the West Portal Station for the past two months are now cleared away. And those Muni trains going through the tunnel will bring some commuting relief to people who rely on those trains.  

Two months ago, Muni began a $41 million project to improve the tunnel, and the hope is that trains will now go faster through the tunnel, which is equipped to withstand a major earthquake.

During the closure, Muni riders had to use buses and shuttles to circumvent the Twin Peaks Tunnel adding to their commute times.

Some Muni employees said everything is going smoothly so far: No delays, no problems.
