The San Francisco coroners officer has identified the suspected shooter who was killed by police near Saint Luke's Hospital on Thursday.

The shooter has been identified as 25-year-old Javier Ivan Lopez Garcia of San Jose.

There are still many unanswered questions, surrounding a deadly police shooting near Saint Luke's Hospital in San Francisco.

Officers say the suspect, later identified as Lopez Garcia, climbed on top of a freight elevator at a construction site, next to the hospital at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, and fired at least one shot toward, or near Saint Luke's.

San Francisco police Wednesday night said the armed gunman near St. Luke’s Hospital who was fatally shot by multiple officers had stolen a shotgun from a sporting goods store in San Bruno.

Initial reports of gunfire first surfaced at about 4:20 p.m. Several people who said they were working at St. Luke's tweeted that the hospital was being locked down after a gunman was spotted in the adjacent construction area.

A massive police response brought dozens of SFPD units to the area.

A KTVU cameraman in the area had reported a large group of police massed at Caesar Chavez and Valencia Street. Caesar Chavez was cordoned off as residents were asked to avoid the area.

During a press briefing Police Chief Greg Suhr said that the armed man with two weapons was spotted walking in the construction zone next to St. Luke's on Caesar Chavez at about 4:15 p.m..

Officers arriving at the scene immediately heard shots being fired in the construction area. Officers spotted a suspect wearing white coveralls on top of the construction elevator at the site aiming the shotgun at the hospital.

Three of the responding officers drew their weapons and fired on the suspect, killing him, according to Suhr.

Upon hearing about the situation in San Francisco, San Bruno police inquired with SFPD about the incident in connection with a robbery on El Camino Real, where a suspect armed with a handgun had stolen a shotgun from a Big 5 Sporting Goods store a short time earlier.

San Bruno police provided a description of the store robbery suspect - a light-skinned male in his late 20s. The description matched that of the deceased suspect.

Suhr also confirmed that the handgun used in the San Bruno robbery was recovered and a stolen vehicle used by the suspect was located.

At this point, a motive is unclear. Police are continuing their investigation into the incident.
