Berkeley police chief asks city to overturn ban on police use of pepper spray during protests

The Berkeley Police chief has asked the city to overturn a 20 year ban on the police use of pepper spray during protests.

Berkeley's city council is expected to vote on Chief Andrew Greenwood's request this coming Tuesday.

In the 26 page memo, Greenwood cited four recent protests where left and right extremists showed up to Berkeley ready to fight.

The request comes as police brace for more protests that could turn violent with conservative speaker Ben Shapiro scheduled to speak at UC Berkeley on Thursday.
