Breathtaking footage of rising "supermoon" taken from Morgan Hill
MORGAN HILL, Calif. (KTVU) - Moon-gazers around the globe have been posting incredible images of an illuminating supermoon lighting up the night ski.
San Jose resident Ryan Wilmot took out his camera on Sunday and captured video of the moon, now circulating around the internet.
Wilmot fixed his camera on the moon, just as it was rising at 5:01 pm, at Anderson Lake in Morgan Hill, where he recorded a huge yellow orange ball coming up from a silhouette of trees.
"The video is in real time (not a time lapse)," said Wilmot. "It really shows how quickly the moon moves across the sky, which is kind of amazing."
The moon was at its peak luminescence in North America before dawn on Monday.
It was the brightest it has been in almost 70 years.
Sky-watchers are experiencing the moon 14 percent bigger and 30 percent brighter than an average full moon because the moon's orbit brought it closer to earth.
Scientists say this is the closest a full moon will get to the earth until November 25, 2034.
