LOS ANGELES, CA - Who wants waffles? American or Belgian, we can’t get enough. Frozen waffles, or “froffles” will do in a pinch- but those are basically textured pancakes. Nothing compares to thick, golden, crunchy-yet-fluffy, fresh-out-of-the-iron waffles.
August 24th is National Waffle Day because that's when Cornelius Swarthout received the first U.S. patent for "the waffle iron" in 1869. We'll dig in and post the photos, but we really like to celebrate year round because waffles have been making breakfast crispy since the 14th century.
Batter was poured between two metal plates and cooked over an open flame. The grid pattern kept the batter from leaking out into the fire. Ingenious and delicious.
From stroopwafels to Hong Kong style egg puffs, the waffle has been evolving ever since. In 1904 the waffle cone was invented at the St. Louis World’s Fair when an ice cream vendor ran out of dishes. The waffle man wrapped one up and the rest is history. Ingenious and Delicious again!
