CHP investigates freeway shooting in San Jose, one man struck by bullet

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The California Highway Patrol investigated an early Thursday morning driveby shooting that injured a man on Interstate 680 in San Jose.

The victim told officers he was driving on northbound Interstate Highway 680, near Jackson Avenue, when someone fired at his car about 3 a.m., according to CHP Officer Ross Lee. The gunfire came out of nowhere.

"The driver did not have any information of what may have prompted this," Lee said.

The man was  was struck by one of the bullets, Lee said. But he was able to get off the freeway, and seek help at a nearby convenience store on Hotstetter Road. He was alert and walking around, and told officers what happened. His female passenger was not injured.

Because the car ended up in San Jose, police originally responded, but the Lee said the CHP took the case over, after learning the shooting happened on the freeway, somewhere between McKee Road and the Berryessa district.

Northbound 680 between Jackson Street and Montague Expressway was closed until 6:30 a.m. during the early morning commute, as officers investigated what happened.
