FAIRFIELD (BCN/KTVU) Fairfield police said a vehicle pursuit this afternoon started when a female passenger indicated to a police officer that she was being kidnapped or assaulted. It ended with the discovery that the driver was shot by the passenger.

Around 2:35 p.m. an officer pursued a white vehicle that crashed into other vehicles at the intersection of Dover Avenue and East Travis Boulevard. Some of the people in the other cars were injured, police said.

Officers then determined the 22-year-old driver was suffering from a gunshot wound and gave him medical aid at the scene. The driver was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver has since died of those injuries and his identity is being withheld while next of kin is being notified.

The driver and 24-year-old female passenger are Fairfield residents. Police believe they were in a relationship and that a 10-month-old child was in the suspect vehicle during the pursuit. The child was not injured.

The passenger was interviewed by police after the crash. Her identity is not being released since the incident is considered domestic violence, according to police.

Police said they are still investigating when the driver was shot, but believe he was shot in the car during the pursuit.

Police also are investigating whether the female was kidnapped or assaulted.

None of the officers fired their weapons during the incident and there are no outstanding suspects, police said.
