Fight after 49ers game leaves man in critical condition, suspect arrested

A Madera man was arrested Tuesday for allegedly assaulting a man and leaving him in critical condition after a San Francisco 49ers football game at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara on Sunday, police said today.

David Aguilera Gonzales, 34, was booked into Elmwood Jail in Milpitas without bail on suspicion of assault causing great bodily injury and battery with serious bodily injury.

The assault took place in the stadium parking lot at the corner of Great America Expressway and Tasman Drive after a game between the 49ers and Arizona Cardinals.

Police said the victim kicked a glass bottle lying on the ground in the parking lot, which landed near Gonzales and prompted him to approach the victim.

Gonzales allegedly punched the victim in the face, then punched him again after the victim slowly attempted to stand up and walk away.

Police said Gonzales then fled the scene in his car. Officers assigned to the stadium responded to the incident, first reported as a medical situation, and interviewed the victim.

The victim was initially cooperative and conscious, but police said his condition worsened and eventually became critical after he was taken to a hospital.

Police said Gonzales was arrested early Tuesday morning at his house in Madera, located about 25 miles north of Fresno.

Anyone who witnessed the assault or has additional information is asked to contact Sgt. Nick Richards at (408) 615-4814.
