Girl scout struck by stray bullet while selling cookies

INDIANAPOLIS, IN- A 9-year-old girl shot in the leg, is proving she's one tough cookie.

Sinai Miller was walking out of her north side home to sell Girl Scout cookies with her sisters when she was hit by a stray bullet.

"I heard three gunshots and one of them hit me in the leg."

Those are words, no nine-year-old should ever have to say.

Sinai Miller is resting her leg. The dressings on her gunshot wound serve as a reminder of what happened the night before.

"She came in screaming, 'Mommy Mommy. It hurt. It hurt.' And I'm like, 'What hurt? What's wrong?' So when I pulled her pant leg up, that's when I discovered that she was shot," he mother recalled.

Sinai was the unintended victim of a shooting right in front of her home.

It happened just as she and her sisters were heading out to sell Girl Scout cookies.

"She's brave. She's very brave," he mother Shanita said.

The brave young girl, has a lot of support.

Sinai's Girl Scout troop dropped off gifts to help her feel better.

And a website was created by Girl Scouts of central Indiana to buy boxes of cookies directly from Sinai.

For this family, the terrifying ordeal comes with a lesson they hope to share with others.

"If there's something that they want to do outside, I feel like we can do it together as a family, so I know that they're safe," Shanita said, "So that won't happen to someone else's child so they won't experience the hurt and pain that not only me but my child, experienced."

For now the family waits for the day when Sinai can go back to just being a kid.
