Hate crime allegations at UC Davis

Officials at UC Davis say two men face hate crime charges, in connection to an attack on an African-American student.

Police say a woman was walking near her residence in the West Village-area, when she was physically assaulted at about 3 a.m. Monday.

Officers say the student called police, who arrested 24-year-old Lonny Doyal Lee and 22-year-old Justin Sheppard on assault and hate crime charges.

A third man, 22-year-old Jake Lee, was charged with public intoxication.

None of the suspects are students.

The attack has stunned many on campus.

Police say the woman was not sexually assaulted and did not require medical treatment.

Police are not disclosing why they consider the attack a hate crime.
