Oakland clinic that treats uninsured to host fundraiser

OAKLAND, Calif. (KTVU) -- An East Bay health clinic is gearing up for a yearly fundraiser that helps it provide free health care to more than 2,500 patients a year.

The Malta Clinic is connected to the Cathedral of Light, but provides services to people of all denominations. There is only one requirement to see a doctor.

"Somebody who comes in is asked one question and one question only," explained Mike Lambert, Malta Clinic Board Member. "Do you have medical insurance? If the answer is no, it's come on in we'll take care of you."

The clinic is able to provide the care through private donations and volunteers. Doctors, nurses and staff work free.

"As much as they appreciate it, I appreciate it," explained Dr. Luke Rohlwing. "It's always good to have that feeling of giving back to your community."

"I really don't want to leave this place," said Jon Frost, a patient for the past 5 years.

Frost was having one of his last appointments at the Malta Clinic to check his blood pressure and diabetes. His new job offers insurance, so he'll have to find a new place to get health care.

"I think I was taking way, way too much for granted," Frost said. "I was taking my health for granted and I've changed my priorities around and they've helped me change my priorities."

"The patients we see are just like you and I, where they have jobs and have homes, but they just lack insurance," Dr. Rohlwing explained.

Rohlwing is a third year resident who is getting the added benefit of learning from more experienced doctors who also volunteer.

"It's a way for a doctor to contribute," said Dr. Tom Wallace. "And there's no better way for me to help than to practice medicine. To practice."

The Malta Clinic's gala fundraiser is Tuesday, October 13th. Click here for more information.
