One person found dead in burning car near Alamo

ALAMO, Calif. (KTVU) - A man died early Friday morning when his vehicle crashed and caught on fire near Interstate Highway 680 in unincorporated Contra Costa County, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Around 2:40 a.m., officers received a report of an overturned vehicle that caught on fire the highway's southbound off-ramp to Livorna Road in Alamo, according to CHP Officer John Fransen.

The victim, who was driving a 1999 Acura, exited the highway at a high rate of speed on the off-ramp, Fransen said.

For an unknown reason, the driver lost control of the vehicle and struck a guardrail. The vehicle then went down an embankment, struck a tree and landed on its passenger side on the off-ramp, according to Fransen.

The vehicle then burst into flames with the driver trapped inside, according to Fransen.

Fire crews extinguished the fire at 3:07 a.m., he said.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, Fransen said.

A Sig-alert was issued for the off-ramp at 3:02 a.m. and has since reopened, according to Fransen.

The identity of the driver has not yet been released by the Contra Costa County coroner's office.
