ROHNERT PARK, Calif. - Rohnert Park police are searching for a hit-and-run driver who injured two children in a crash on Friday night.
What we know:
Rohnert Park Department of Public Safety officers were called just before 9:25 p.m. on Friday to the intersection of Bodway Parkway and Waterside Lane on reports of the crash and found the two juveniles injured at the scene.
The two victims were taken to a hospital for treatment, and one was reported to have suffered major injuries.
A preliminary investigation into the crash revealed the two victims were riding an electric scooter in the area when they were struck by a silver Dodge Durango SUV that fled the scene after the collision.
Witness Kimberly Brasil said she was inside her home when she heard the crash.
"I just heard one girl crying in pain," Brasil said. "It's just absolutely devastating, and the fact that knowing that person didn't stop is just mind-boggling to me."
Brasil said she initially believed a parked vehicle had been struck, something she said is not uncommon in the neighborhood.
"I was up in my room watching TV. I heard a big pound. We are known in the neighborhood for people hitting the cars on the street, so that's what I thought happened," she said. "Then I came out to the balcony and saw that there was a scooter, and then I assumed it was two kids. I immediately grabbed my phone, called 911. I then went into my house, looked at my cameras, and saw that my camera picked up the girls on their scooter on the bike lane, and then right at the crosswalk, that's where the kind, my camera kind of blacked out, but you could see it was a silver SUV."
Police said the driver left the scene without stopping and was later captured on surveillance footage running a stop sign.
Brasil said she remains concerned about safety at the intersection, despite the installation of flashing pedestrian crossing lights.
"People speed up and pass, even when the lights are flashing," she said. "I'm walking my two dogs, and I go to walk, hit the lights obviously before I walk, and I have had to pull my dogs back because people just zoom right by us to the point where I kind of avoid crossing at this crosswalk and go down further where there's a stop sign."
