San Francisco police fatally shoot man after carjacking of California lottery van
SAN FRANCISCO (KTVU) - San Francisco police fatally shot a suspect on Friday who officers say carjacked a female driver of a California Lottery van.
At a news conference, Sgt. Michael Andraychak said the suspect who took the white van ran into the Alice Griffith Housing Project at Fitzgerald Avenue and Jennings Street about 10:30 a.m. Officers arrived shortly afterward, an officer-involved shooting occurred, and the suspect was shot. He was taken to San Francisco General Hospital and died, Andraychak said. He did not say who shot first, but aerial images showed a patrol car window had been shot out.
The Medical Examiner's Office identified the suspect as Keita O'Neil, but there was a discrepancy on the suspect's age, between family members and the medical examiner.
Prior to the fatal shooting, Andraychak said police received a call at 10:30 a.m. about a robbery and carjacking involving a stolen California Lottery van in the 1800 block of 23rd Street in the Potrero Hill neighborhood. The female driver of that van had been assaulted and Andraychak said that three or four suspect in a gold SUV were thought to be involved.
The gold SUV and the California Lottery van began caravaning from Gilman Street into the Bayview District, Andraychak said, and they split up. Officers detained four suspects in the gold SUV in the Bayview. The other officers chased the suspect in the stolen van. Police did not say if the suspect who was killed was armed or not.
A pile of bloody clothes lay next to a police car with the number 081 on it. The same police car had its windows shot out. Blood was spattered on its door. The white lottery van was also at the scene behind yellow crime-scene tape.
Her injuries were non-life threatening.
Body-worn cameras from the officers involved in the incident have been retrieved, "and we are canvassing the area for other video that may be available," Andraychak said.
The Police Department's homicide detail, the San Francisco District Attorney's Office, the San Francisco Police Internal Affairs Division, the Department of Police Accountability and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner are investigating the shooting, Andraychak said.
The investigations are in accordance with the department's policy on officer-involved shootings.
The spokesman said that, also in accordance with the department's policy, a town hall meeting will be held within 10 days of the shooting to provide the community with an update of the investigation.
