Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office investigates inmate's death
SANTA CLARA COUNTY, Calif. (KTVU) - The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office is looking into another death of an inmate at the main jail in San Jose.
The department is already under scrutiny, since three correctional officers were charged with murdering another inmate last month.
KTVU checked with the coroner's office and was told they are still working on notifying the family following the latest death.
An autopsy has not yet been performed. KTVU was told it may happen Tuesday or Wednesday.
The sheriff's department says a correctional deputy found the inmate unresponsive in his cell at 10:30 a.m. Monday.
Paramedics tried to resuscitate him, but he was pronounced dead a half hour later.
Sheriff's officials are not releasing the man’s identity, how he died or any other additional information.
The department has come under scrutiny since three deputies, Jereh Lubrin, Rafael Rodriguez and Matthew Farris were arrested and charged with killing mentally ill inmate Michael Tyree.
The District Attorney’s office says Tyree was beaten to death. One of the deputies, Farris will have a bail hearing Tuesday.
The two other deputies charged posted the million and half dollars bail Monday, and were released from custody.
Since their arrests, the sheriff has implemented mandatory training for new recruits in the academy on how to deal with mentally ill inmates.
She has also called for funds to upgrade the camera system in the jail since there was not one in the cell block where Tyree died.
This is the third inmate death in recent months. A woman died of natural causes in August.
