SFPD body-camera video shows deadly shooting of suspect in dispensary founder's shooting
SAN FRANCISCO -
San Francisco police officials on Tuesday released body-camera videos showing the deadly police shooting of a suspect who hours earlier had shot and wounded a cannabis dispensary founder.
Surveillance video shows Cheasarack Chong, 35, riding up on an e-bike near 9th and Mission streets on Jan. 27, walking up to Vapor Room co-owner Martin Olive, who's on the sidewalk checking his phone, police said.
Without any words exchanged, police say Chong then shot Olive several times. But the shooting continued, according to a witness "who observed a male standing over and yelling at another male who was lying on the sidewalk. The witness then saw the male fire several rounds at the male on the ground," said acting police Cmdr. Mark Im.
After the shooting, Chong then walked to his apartment building nearby before going into his unit on the sixth floor. He refused to come out.
Hours later, body-camera footage police on a nearby rooftop firing foam projectiles into the suspect's apartment
A few seconds later, the suspect opens fire through his window with a rifle.
"Did he shoot?" one officer asks.
"Yeah! Shots fired," another replies.
And seconds after that, tactical Ofc. David Edgerson returns fire with his own rifle, killing Chong.
Police recovered the suspect's rifle and several handguns.
Olive is still in the hospital being treated for six gunshot wounds.
Chong's business partner told KTVU it was unprovoked attack and not a robbery attempt.
Police Chief Bill Scott said the information released by the department was done "without suggesting a premature judgment on the appropriateness of the force used in this incident."
The San Francisco DA's office and other agencies are investigating the police shooting.
