Son of late CHP officer receives special first day of school escort

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KTVU) - The son of a fallen California Highway Patrol officer received a very special escort and show of support to mark his first day of school.
Three Sacramento CHP officers who served with Ofc. Lucas Chellew, 31, walked beside their late partner's son, Cameron, as he began his new school year on Wednesday.
"While Lucas' beat partners cannot replace him, words can't describe how excited Cameron was to see his 'best buddies,' " the CHP wrote in a Facebook post.
The post included photos showing Officers Nett, Dixon, and Baltazar with Cameron at school along with the boy's mother Christina and baby sister Hadley.
Ofc. Chellew died earlier this year on Feb. 22, after crashing into another car while chasing a motorcyclist in south Sacramento.
He was an eight year veteran of the Highway Patrol and the son of a retired CHP captain.
"Though we will never have Lucas back, we will continue to take these opportunities to show his family love, care, and support, the CHP way," the Highway Patrol wrote on Facebook.
Responding to the post, Chellew's wife expressed her gratitude. "Today three exemplary officers took time out of their busy schedules to simply walk hand in hand with a six year old on a day that was a little more bitter than sweet," Christina Chellew wrote.
She went on to note, "As usual in the Chellew household, the roar of a few Harleys and the sight of blue bow ties quickly changed the tone."
