Suspect, victim identified in San Jose standoff

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KTVU) - KTVU is learning new information after a gunman held a woman hostage for several hours in San Jose Monday.

The man, identified as Leonel Acevedo and the hostage identified as Yolanda Najera, are both dead.

Police confirm that Acevedo and Najera knew each other and that Acevedo formerly lived at the residence on the 4400 block of Camden Avenue.

The standoff started at around 2:18 p.m. on Monday.

San Jose Police dispatch received a 911 call regarding a male with a gun who forcefully took a female into the home.

Police say Acevedo fired two shots into the ground before entering the residence.

Arriving officers set up a perimeter around the location of the residence and blocked off roadways.

A Special Operations Unit was called in to assist and they took over perimeter positions from patrol officers.

Evacuation of homes in the surrounding area was initiated.

At approximate 5:05 P.M. police say Acevedo exited the residence armed with a least one handgun and fired shots in the direction of officers.

One officer returned fire and struck Acevedo who was pronounced dead a short time later.

As officers were searching the residence they located Najera suffering from at least one gun shot wound.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

During the incident an officer was struck by gunfire and sustained a minor flesh wound.

The officer, a 12 year veteran of the police department, was transported to a local area hospital where he was treated for a non-life threatening injury.

The motive and circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.

Neighbors told KTVU the couple living in the house was quiet and there were no outward signs of trouble.

"There's not a lot of activity. We don't see a lot of activity, but I do see them walk up and down the street with a little child," said neighbor Dora Quintana. "But they're not real vocal to anybody that I know of."
