Report: Kevin Durant becoming unrestricted free agent

The Kevin Durant free agent sweepstakes is about to begin. ESPN basketball insider, Adrian Wojnarowski, reports that the injured Warriors star will opt out of the final year of his contract and become an unrestricted free agent.

Durant was expected to decline the $31.5 million player option, in order to sign a more lucrative, longer-term deal with one of his many suitors.
 

Wojnarowski says league sources tell him Durant and his business manager, Rich Kleinman, are in New York, "evaluating free agency options."<

So far, they are keeping the process private, and not discussing yet who they will talk to, or where he will sign.

Teams that will reportedly make a run at him include the New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, along with the Warriors.

Durant missed a month of the playoffs after straining his right calf.

But the 30-year-old then ruptured his achilles in the same leg, in game 5 of the NBA Finals against the Toronoto Raptors, during his first game back.

He is expected to miss all of next season recovering from the achilles tear.

Under NBA guidelines, Durant can re-sign with the Warriors to a max contract, for 5 years at $221 million.

He can also sign with another team, for at most, 4 years and $164 million.
