An evacuation warning was issued on Wednesday morning for residents in the Big Sur area south of Rocky Creek Bridge on state Highway 1.

Spring is here, and it's starting off pretty stormy.

It has been over a year since a levee break flooded the farming community of Pajaro, and on Wednesday residents lined up for the first day of an expanded recovery financial aid program.

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory through Friday evening.

The blizzard that whipped through the Sierra over the weekend closed roads and ski resorts and blanketed the region with lots of powdery white stuff.

The NWS called the Sierra storm an “extreme blizzard" but didn’t expect records to be broken.

A blizzard in the Sierra continued to cause headaches for those on the roads hoping to get to Tahoe, including Interstate 80, which finally reopened Monday morning along Donner Pass.

Sunday brought scattered showers to the Bay Area as a blizzard blazed on over the Sierra.

A tornado warning was in effect earlier Saturday just miles south of Gilroy, according to the National Weather Service.

Blizzard conditions and whiteouts with multiple feet of snowfall in the Lake Tahoe region continued on Saturday. As many as 10 feet of snow is expected to fall in some of the higher elevations of the Sierra by the end of the weekend. 

California's mountains provide water, natural habitat, recreation, and tourism. That said, the mountains can provide real winter danger. As of Friday afternoon, I-80 westbound traffic is being turned at the Nevada State Line, and eastbound traffic on the same interstate is being turned around at Drum Forebay due to spin-outs, high winds, and low visibility.

Blizzard conditions on Friday morning were picking up en route to the Sierra, prompting the California Highway Patrol to beg drivers: Don't make the trip if you don't have to. 

Yosemite National Park closed at midnight Thursday because of a major winter storm that is expected to cause blizzard conditions. And ski resorts were closing some of their runs, too.

As a blizzard started pounding the Sierra on Thursday, wind gusts whipped at more than 100 mph at certain peaks in the Sierra including near the Palisades ski resort.
