Big-rig crash, fuel spill snarls Bay Bridge traffic
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (KTVU) - All lanes of eastbound Interstate Highway 80 at the Bay Bridge have reopened following a big-rig crash early this morning at a bridge entrance in San Francisco, a California Highway Patrol officer said.
The crash was first reported at 4:59 a.m. near the First Street on-ramp. CHP officials reported that the big-rig jackknifed and crashed into a wall, causing it to leak up to 80-90 gallons of diesel fuel.
A couple of eastbound lanes reopened in the following hours. The truck was eventually cleared from the traffic lanes and the fuel was cleaned up, allowing all lanes to reopen by 11:50 a.m., CHP officials said.
The Essex Street and First Street on-ramps to Highway 80 had also closed following the crash but have since reopened.
The crash caused a major traffic backup on city streets in downtown San Francisco and residual delays are expected this afternoon, CHP officials said.
