Cal student dies after fall from balcony
BERKELEY, Calif. (KTVU) - A University of California at Berkeley student fell to her death early Sunday morning in Berkeley, police said today.
Kimberly Tze died at a hospital following a fall shortly after midnight from a fourth-floor balcony of a building in the 2700 block of Dwight Way, a few blocks south of the main university campus.
She hit the sidewalk below. The Alameda county coroner's bureau is not yet releasing the cause of Tze's death.
"The campus community is deeply saddened by the tragic death of Kimberly Tze, a junior who was studying computer science," university officials said in a statement.
"Our thoughts and prayers go out to Kimberly's family and friends during this difficult time."
University officials are getting in touch with Tze's family to offer support. Counseling is available to students, staff and faculty who may need it, according to university officials.
The circumstances surrounding Tze's death, such as whether the balcony failed, is under investigation by police. Six people died in 2015 in Berkeley when a balcony failed on a separate building.
