VALLEJO, Calif. - The California Highway Patrol is set to help the Vallejo police department with curbing sideshows and reckless driving.
Vallejo Police Sgt. Rashad Hollis said that "beginning in the coming weeks," the CHP will support his department by conducting "multiple operations" a month during the evening weekend hours.
"These operations will involve additional CHP officers supplementing VPD resources to enhance our ability to respond swiftly and effectively to sideshow activity," Hollis said in a statement. "Together, the two agencies will enforce all California Vehicle Code laws, aiming to deter and disrupt reckless driving while holding offenders accountable for jeopardizing public safety."
Hollis pointed to at least four new California laws, such as closing loopholes to allow impounding cars and obtaining warrants to seize cars associated with sideshows, which should help police.
The CHP has been helping out in Oakland since last year.
Last month, Vallejo residents signed an online petition asking Gov. Gavin Newsom to deploy the CHP in their city, which has seen several acts of violence in recent months.
