Investigators believe San Jose home invasion led to man's shooting death

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KTVU) - A man was shot to death in San Jose on Thursday night and police are trying to figure out who did it and why.

There is the possibility that this might have been a home invasion in the tony Elan Village apartment complex, police told KTVU. One neighbor, Debbie, says the neighborhood is not safe.

“Security is an issue," she said. "Cars are broken into, bashed in with hammers and whatever. An ATM had to be removed. It’s at the point it’s not safe.”

Police were sent to an apartment in the 300 block of Elan Village Lane about 8:40 p.m. on a report a person had been shot. Officers located a man suffering from at least one gunshot wound, police said. The man was taken to the hospital and was pronounced dead a short time later.

"It's totally surprising, right? I always used to think this is a very safe are you know?," said Vinay Verma, a tech worker and resident of the complex.

Resident Manu Bhadoria also said their had been car break ins, adding, "That scares me because everything is gated here and I don't know how they get into it?"

"We'll keep our doors locked and bolted," said resident Mike Stewart. 

The residential area is described as a quiet tech-worker bubble. 

Police say the deadly gunfire took place in a first floor unit of the apartment building. 

Police said the motive and circumstances surrounding the shooting are still under investigation.

No suspects have been identified, and no arrests have been made.

Police have not released the identity of the victim.
