What we know:
California Highway Patrol officers were sent just after 5:15 p.m. to the westbound side of State Route 24, just east of Acalanes Road, on reports of the crash and found a sedan crashed against a pair of trees, according to a department statement.
Emergency responders found the driver trapped inside the car and removed him before taking him to a hospital, where he died of his injuries.
A preliminary investigation into the crash revealed the sedan was driving westbound on the highway when it left the roadway "for an unknown reason" and slammed into the trees, according to the CHP.
Authorities also noted that it was raining at the time of the crash and it appeared the driver was not wearing a seat belt.
What we don't know:
However, the CHP also said that it was currently not known whether DUI was a factor in the crash.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing, and anyone with information was asked to contact the CHP Contra Costa Area office in Martinez at 925-387-1900.
