Man killed in San Jose when tree falls on him at park

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) — A man was killed when a 70-foot tall eucalyptus tree fell on him at a park in San Jose.

KNTV reports Tuesday that his death was reported just after 3 p.m. Monday at Berryessa Creek Park.

His name and age were not released. Police said several children in the area were able to escape as the tree was falling.

City officials are investigating and say the cause could be weather or drought related.

At least four others in Northern California have been killed by fallen trees over the last few years, including a camp counselor in 2013 and two teen boys last August, both in Yosemite.

A 16-year-old boy in Oakland died when a branch broke while he was climbing a tree last December.

A city arborist was called to investigate the cause. A specialized tree inspector will also investigate on Tuesday.
