Strike in Mexico leads to U.S. avocado shortage, price spike

Avocado prices have reached a record high in parts of the country.

The price increase is due to an avocado shortage, which began after Mexican growers and pickers went on strike.

They say they’re unhappy with the low payment they’ve been receiving for their work.

Usually about 40-million pounds of avocados are transported from Mexico to the U.S. per week. That figure has dropped to just about 13-million pounds.

According to the latest price check, here in the Bay Area, the average price of an avocado was about $1.47 in September.

That’s up about 45 cents from the month before.
