SUV crash into San Leandro home leave woman critical, house yellow tagged

SAN LEANDRO, Calif. (KTVU) - A San Leandro home was yellow tagged by city building inspectors Tuesday after a speeding SUV drove into the garage late Monday night, critically injuring a woman sleeping inside, according to police.

Residents in the Washington Manor home near Farnsworth and Purdue streets were allowed to retrieve their belongings today but cannot live in the house again until major damage caused to the garage and kitchen by the crash is repaired, police said.

The crash occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Monday, when an Acura SUV drove into a garage wall of the single-family home, penetrating completely inside the garage, police said.

A 25-year-old woman who was sleeping inside the garage, which had been converted to a sleeping area, was pinned under the vehicle and had to be extricated. She was taken to a hospital with serious injuries and remains in critical condition Tuesday evening, police said.

A dog was also in the garage with a litter of puppies at the time of collision, and two of those puppies were injured in the crash. They were taken to an emergency veterinarian for treatment but have since died of their injuries, police said.

The car's driver, a 20-year-old man, suffered injuries that were not considered life threatening. His condition Tuesday evening is unknown, police said.

The crash remains under investigation and police are looking into whether or not alcohol or drugs were factors.

"Regardless of that answer, the man was traveling at an extremely high rate of speed, much too fast for that neighborhood," Lt. Robert McManus said in a statement.

Farnsworth Street has a 30 mph speed limit, McManus said.

Police said they do not yet know what charges they will seek against the driver, but will meet with the District Attorney at the conclusion of their investigation.
