Wrong-runway confusion during landing at SFO

Flight controllers at SFO had to stop an incoming flight from landing on the wrong runway.

It happened just before noon on Tuesday. According to airport officials an Aeromexico flight was cleared to land on runway 28 right, but when the plane was about a mile away, controllers noticed the plane was lined up for 28 left.

A Virgin America jet was on the 28 left at the time.

Controllers told the crew to execute a missed approach and it did so landing safely a short time later.

The FAA is investigating.
