On Election Day, polls must open at 7 a.m. and remain open until 8 p.m.

But public polling indicates that Proposition 16 is struggling, suggesting that voters may not be ready to repeal a quarter-century-old ban on affirmative action

Proposition 25 would substitute risk assessments to decide who should remain in jail while awaiting trial. Separately, Proposition 20 would restore some criminal penalties, including again barring those convicted of certain serious offenses from earlier release.

Prop. 17 would restore the vote for some felons and Prop. 18 would allow 17-year-olds to vote in primaries if they turn 18 before the general election.

On election night, however, experts say the nation must be patient because there is a good chance no winner will be declared on Nov. 3.
