Niles Canyon Road between Fremont and Sunol will remain closed “until further notice” as crews work to clean up a series of mudslides and damage from the flooded Alameda Creek following several days of heavy rains.

A much loved, San Anselmo three-quarter century day school, finds itself looking for new digs because a massive oak tree, felled by the storms, slammed into it, leaving it homeless for now.

East Bay Municipal Utility District officials said there were several sewage overflows just before New Year's during the storms, raising concern from Baykepeer, whose environmental nonprofit keeps an eye on the health of the Bay. 

Residents of Capitola were still without power on Friday afternoon, but a mandatory evacuation order was lifted as of 5:31 p.m., after the atmospheric river slammed their coastal city in Santa Cruz County, where their historic pier was torn apart in the heavy rains and wind.  An estimated 50 businesses and about 350 residents in a two square block area are impacted. 

With multiple powerful storms continuing to bear down on California, state officials have warned that rural areas are the most at risk of flooding because the levees that protect them aren’t built to the same standards as others that shield more populated cities.

Residents weary of rain and waterlogged basements will get a brief reprieve in the wet weather on Friday – only to be met with more storms throughout the weekend and beyond.
