2 found dead inside car at San Jose State parking garage

A man and a woman were found dead in a parked car near San Jose State University on Saturday afternoon, and authorities are investigating the circumstances of their deaths.

Found unresponsive

What we know:

Police at SJSU told KTVU that units were called just after 2 p.m. to a parking garage located at 350 S. 4th St. after a man and a woman were found unresponsive inside a parked car.

When officers arrived, they immediately began providing medical aid to the man and woman before first responders pronounced both dead at the scene.

"Our officers arrived on scene, made contact, immediately started medical aid to the two subjects, you had a male adult and an adult female," said Captain Jermaine Thomas with the San Jose State University Police Department. "After our current investigation, they are non-affiliates, they are not associated with the campus or students."

Police are investigating the possibility of an overdose, although the exact cause of death remains under investigation.

Campus police said there is no threat to the university community and no suspects are being sought.

"The initial call came up that someone saw them in the vehicle earlier today, which then they saw them a few hours later and that's when we were notified," Thomas said.

What we don't know:

Their identities were withheld pending notification of their next of kin.

Investigators say they are reviewing campus surveillance video as the investigation continues.

San Jose State says spring classes and graduation ceremonies have already wrapped up, so there were fewer students on campus Saturday.

Community reaction

The parking garage is open to the public 24 hours a day and requires payment to park.

Some students and recent graduates said the incident was concerning.

"I feel better in the campus, versus when I walk out of the campus, the area is very sketchy, might be a lot of drugs around," said San Jose State student Anthony Garcia. "I always look around my surroundings."

Rebekah Rardin, who recently graduated from San Jose State, said she parked in the same garage Saturday while attending FanimeCon nearby.

"I feel like that's pretty crazy, we do get police reports through our school emails about different kinds of crimes, but there's normally just graffiti stuff like that," she said. "So I feel like this is pretty intense."

"I commute here, so I was only here maybe once a week in the evening and so I felt generally safe," Rardin added. "But since I had evening classes I would have a friend walk me back to my car just to be safe."
