SALINAS, Calif. - A coyote was in too deep, so to speak, when it got stuck in a water retention pond in Monterey County and had to be rescued.
Officials with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Monterey County said they received a call about the canine stuck in the Salinas pond.
SPCA officials posted photos on social media on Thursday of the coyote's ordeal. It is likely the animal was chasing prey when it became stuck, unable to climb out of the reservoir's steep and slick surface.

The wildlife center officials had to chase the coyote down before safely putting it in a crate and taking it to their facility for a medical assessment.
The coyote had a chance to dry off, is said to be doing well and is expected to be released into the wild on Friday "under sunnier skies," a SPCA Monterey County spokesperson said.
