Father and son who drowned near Half Moon Bay identified
HALF MOON BAY, Calif. - The victims who drowned in the ocean in Half Moon Bay over the weekend were identified by officials on Tuesday.
The Santa Clara County Coroner's Office said a 39-year-old male, Mukund Kalyanaraman Murali and an 8-year-old boy, Vihaan Mukund, both of Santa Clara, are the victims.
A KTVU reporter went to an address associated with the elder of the two victims and a woman who answered the door confirmed the victims were father and son.
Friends, family and neighbors of the deceased gathered at the home on Tuesday evening.
The victims were initially rescued at Cowell Ranch Beach near Half Moon Bay on Sunday afternoon and were taken to Stanford Medical Center. The boy had to be airlifted while the man was taken by ambulance.
California Highway Patrol's helicopter and Cal Fire assisted in the rescue effort.
At the time of their drownings, a beach hazard was in place for the coast and lasted through Monday. The boy was initially pulled into the ocean.
A day later, state park officials confirmed the two had died.
